How to Choose a CCTV Camera: IP or Analog?
A detailed look at the differences between IP and analog cameras — resolution, price, installation, and which suits your property.
The first question when choosing a camera: IP system or analog? Both have their place, and the right answer depends on your property and budget.
Analog (HD-TVI, HD-CVI) systems
Modern analog cameras deliver 2MP and 5MP as standard. Their main advantage is price: a full kit (4 cameras + DVR + installation) is noticeably cheaper than IP. If coaxial cable is already run, upgrading is even easier.
IP systems
An IP camera is a network device with capabilities far beyond simple recording: human and vehicle detection, line crossing, face recognition. With PoE, power and data travel over a single cable, simplifying installation.
Which to choose?
For small budgets and simple tasks — analog. For business, analytics and scalability — IP. We often recommend a hybrid: IP at critical points, analog elsewhere.
